interestingなレッスン

７月１２日　火曜日　１０：０５〜１０：４５　曇り

　Ｊ先生とマンツーマンの校正の続きをする。が、その前に “Can I have a chat?” “What’s new?”で先頃の “Active Listening, senior peer counseling”のことを話題にする。 “peer counseling”はよくあることだとのこと。私は「傾聴ボランティア(senior peer counseling)」に関して懐疑的である、と言ったところ、それはpersonallyにそう思うのかgenerallyに言っているのか、とつっこみがはいる。Personallyにだと率直に申し上げる。
　“Active Listening”は会話学校の先生達にも必須のスキルであろう、と水をむけてみると、興味深いコメントを聞くことができた。

彼によると、「listeningというものは、文化によって違う。アメリカ人での場合は、interactive（相互に作用する）なものがなくては、listeningしたということにはならない。」つまり、一方がただ熱心に聴いてあげてもだめ、お互いに言葉が行き来しなければ聴いてもらった気がしない、ということらしい。
なるほど、お互いに言葉が双方向に飛び交って（突っ込みもその一部か）始めてcommunicationというものは成り立つという考えらしい。日本文化での「聴く」と英語文化での「listen」、またcommunication、counselingといった言葉の根源的な意味を考える契機になった。
　校正の作業はセカンド・ヴァージョンを基にしたので、すいすいと７ページ進んだ。相変わらず冠詞、前置詞が難しい。自分ではユーモアで表現していた部分に？のチェックが入っていた。趣旨を説明したら、意を酌んだ適切な表現をアドバイスしてくれた。
　「nomad＝遊牧、流浪の民」についてベネディクト・アンダーソンの「幻想の共同体」を援用しつつ書いたところの意味は通じるか聞いてみた。少し手直しをしてＯＫになった。Ｊ先生はその本は読んだことはないが、“a kind of nomad myself”と言われた。日本にいる英語の先生は、良い意味でのそんな人が多いと思う。
　私たちの年代の主婦像のくだり、「解るか？」「I see such kind of housewives」と内容に関して話題にする。アメリカの場合、年代と共に地域によりかなり差があるらしい。彼のお母さんの例など聞くことができた。
　今日のレッスンは雑談を含めとてもinterestingであった。
